What Is Therapeutic Exercise?
Therapeutic exercise is a foundational part of physical therapy where your provider prescribes specific, targeted movements, such as stretches, strengthening drills, or balance work, designed to correct the exact impairments causing your pain or limiting your function. Unlike general fitness workouts, every exercise is chosen for a specific reason tied to your condition.
How It Helps You
Think of your body's tissues, muscles, tendons, joints, and even nerves, as needing the right kind and amount of "load" to heal and get stronger. Too little movement lets weakness and stiffness set in; the right amount of controlled movement guides healing and rebuilds capacity. This works by:
Gradually and safely loading injured tissue, which stimulates muscles, tendons, and ligaments to rebuild strength and resilience
Releasing endorphins, your body's natural pain relievers, which reduce how much pain you feel during and after activity
Activating central pain-inhibiting pathways in your brain and spinal cord, effectively turning down your body's pain "volume"

What You Might Feel
